SINHG’s Kayaking trips have always been among the favorite trips for our members and this Fall we have 3 very special ones. Instruction, lifejackets and paddles are provided by the outfitter for all our trips. All you need is sunscreen, water, snacks and show up for the fun!
Kayak Trip – Penny Creek
Come paddle with us as we explore the wonderful ACE basin. Enjoy a fun morning paddling through Penny Creek, a tributary of the Edisto River. This paddle winds through freshwater marshes, old rice canals, and forests. The ACE Basin is home to a diverse group of plants and animals, including endangered and threatened species. This area has been closed since Hurricane Helene came through and blew down dozens of trees into the river, blocking the waterway. Due to the efforts of many local fishermen and other boaters, it is now reopened. Anticipated paddle length should be a couple of hours.
Kayak Trip – Wando River
Experience one of the truly scenic areas of the SC Lowcountry, when the seasons start to change, so do the colors and the habitats. Join with friends for this exceptionally beautiful trip on the Wando River, a medium-sized tributary of the Cooper River that winds from its origin in the Francis Marion Natural Forest down to the Cooper. The approximately 2-hour route going from the Paradise Island boat ramp back into the forest should see plentiful wildlife including Eagles and Ospreys that have established nests. There should be shrimp, fish, and other wildlife as well.
Kayak Trip – Chessie Creek Circumnavigation
This trip is best for the experienced kayaker in good shape as we join together for a 6-hour exploration of this varied and unique tributary of the Ashepoo River. The Spring 2026 trip to Chessie Creek was sold out. On this longer Chessie Creek kayak trip we will be winding around an island with a series of abandoned rice fields and irrigation canals, much of which is unexplored due to its distance from the boat landings. This will allow us to see even more wildlife. We will stop for breaks at a couple of beaches and other areas along the way. This trip will take SINHG kayaking to a new level and allow us to more thoroughly explore one of the most interesting of SC Lowcountry’s habitats.
